I have been married before…a few times. I am certainly not a Zsa Zsa Gabor (married 9 times), but I am likewise no poster child for marriages that you keep longer than a good car. Not that I am not a fan of marriage. I believe in the whole institution – clearly, as I have done it a few times. I have just not been successful at marriage.
I always marvel at, and applaud, those who have marriages that last 20 plus years. As for those couples who are married for 40 or 50 years, I want to petition for sainthood for them. Marriage is not easy and it takes (in my mind) a tremendous amount of love, commitment, and patience to get to these milestones measured by decades.
I say all the above to give you a context for the cartoon I share with you today. It makes me laugh, not because I don’t value marriage, but because I can identify with the repeated failure in it.
To me the above cartoon is reminiscent of the notion that hope springs eternal. Perhaps not for me – my marriage dance card may be full – but for those who think that divorce carries with it a life sentence of single-dom. Take a lesson from Zsa Zsa – a mini-lesson if you will; if at first you don’t succeed, try, try, again. Okay…maybe just try again…otherwise, you may be married a few times. 😉

Sainthood? Probably not, although we’ve been married 45 1/2 years. They have rarely been smooth years, but I’m glad we kept slogging forward. THESE are the good years. I think there was as much German stubbornness as anything else. No real advise–only the note that it IS possible. I was 17, he was 18, and we had nothing to start with. Except love and perserverance. And even those were often shaky. Keep building–you’ll end up with something worthwhile.
