Self love…yes, that is where I am going today. I decided that the only new year resolution that I could adopt and stick to was one of a once a week session of self love.
Now, before I cause some of you to run away in horror at what I am going to write next – let me say that what I mean by self love is not what some of you may think it is (although I can understand why you wouldn’t hesitate to think that I would discuss that kind of self love here – I would…maybe another day).
My resolution is about recognizing and acknowledging something about myself that I love every week in 2012. 52 things I love about me.
I know that doesn’t sound very resolution like, but it is. You see, we – me, you, all of us – tend to focus on our deficiencies more than our strengths. Resolutions are often born in the notion that the goal is curing our deficiencies to enhance the human being we are. So rarely do we recognize the good things we have to offer – that just wouldn’t be polite or humble. But if I cannot see and champion my strengths then how can I expect others to do so and how can I expect others to trust what I say I see as strengths in them? So I have resolved to practice self love weekly and acknowledge those things – however small or odd – that I love about me.
My first session of self love is acknowledging that I love that I am an imperfect person and that I know it. I am perfectly imperfect. I think knowing that I am imperfect gives me the freedom to make mistakes and forgive myself; and, I think it allows others to be their imperfect selves around me (imperfection loves company). I never want to be perceived as cookie-cutter perfect – I want to be different in the way that only I can. Not that anyone has ever likely mistaken me to be a perfect person…indeed, I am not even sure there are perfect people at all (it’s like Bigfoot – does the creature even exist?).
So, every week I will recognize one thing I love about me and I will try and regularly share those things here with you. I say try because as a perfectly imperfect person I recognize that sometimes my blog entries are not a function of structured methodical writing, but are instead a free flowing narrative of whatever hits my radar that day (and I know “sometimes” is a conservative way to put it). I want to encourage you to likewise practice self love on a regular basis whether it be weekly like me or if you are really good at it, try daily self love sessions.
Resolution 2012:
Self love(week one) – imperfect person who knows it.
One down, 51 to go. 😉
Day nine hundred and fourteen of the new forty – obla di obla da

2012 is now lookin’ good–lookin’ GOO-OOD! This is the perfect companion to keeping a gratitude journal! I’m still over-the-top excited about the Pay It Forward movement–and now there is this to look forward to.
Oh, yes–lookin’ good!
