My magnetic personality…

While at the Mall of America last weekend I visited the magnet store.  While there a series of magnets caught my eye. If I had to classify them I would call them Leave It To Beaver meets Roseanne (or for the younger folks out there who do not understand my television references – the hopelessly unrealistic wholesome imprint of the 50s meets the real-life dysfunctional imprint of the 90s).  Since my visit to the magnet store I have found an online site that sells these magnets and they refer to this line as the Retro B**ch line (not exactly sure why I took out the “it” here – but it gives one pause should they be called the “It Girl”).

Anyway, I got three magnets at the magnet store.  I could have probably only gotten two, but they were three for $12 and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to save an additional 50 cents on each magnet by buying a third (the fact that this makes sense to me drives Mike crazy).

The first magnet I selected just seemed to fit me given my leanings toward habitual monogamy. It actually reminded me of something my student Chuck Cunningham (who I have written about a number of times in my blog) might say.  Chuck’s current favorite thing to say to me whenever marriage is mentioned in the same paragraph as my name is, “Carol, for the good of the program – DO NOT marry again.”  I can’t help but laugh when I hear it.

The second magnet gave me great glee – I thought I could put it in my office to serve as a reminder to wayward students that I could be tough.  Alas, I recognized after I got it home that it really dated me.  The actors and actresses of yesteryear are not all that well-known by the college students of today.  To them Brad Pitt is an old-timer – Brad Pitt!!!  OMG!  When did I become so old?  Expecting students would know of Joan Crawford is likely way out of the realm of possibility.  But what the heck, with Joan’s photo on the magnet it does still deliver a fairly potent message.

The final magnet I selected is one that sports a quotation I have long embraced.  Since I was buying three magnets to save 50 cents each on the other two, I decided to buy this magnet to remind me that role modeling is a constant state – be it positive or negative.

After visiting the online magnet store and looking at all the other Retro B**ch magnets available I found more magnets that I thought I should have.  I will share some of them with you below, but some are just too colorful to share.  You’ll have to go to the site yourself to see those. Far be it for me to shatter your innocence.  I must say though, there is something so appealing to me about these Retro B**ch magnets…could it be that I am an “It Girl!!?” 😉
