Expired: Pizza Review in Retrospect

I had a troubling moment last evening after I went to dispose of the box from the DiGiorno three pack box of pepperoni pizzas I purchased from Sam’s Club recently. As I was deconstructing the pizza box for recycling I noticed that the best by date stamped on the box was November 4, 2015.

Whoa…back up the bus…2015? AAARRRGGHH!!! That means I ate not one, not two, but three technically expired pizzas over the past month.

Now I am left to reflect upon whether my initial positive review of the three pizza experiences should be re-evaluated.  As I recall it, pizzas one and two were just fine; but, after discovering the date on the box, pizza three felt like a lead balloon in my stomach. I hope that my response to pizza three was psychological, not an actual response to bad food. I imagine I would not have given the pizza a second thought otherwise.

I called Sam’s Club a heads-up and they promised to check their stock and give me another box when I am back in. The manager theorized that DiGiorno had supplied them with these outdated pizzas in error. Apparently, Sam’s Club regularly rotates stock and it could not have been their error.

As for me, you can bet I will never eat another frozen pizza without checking the best by date. Indeed, the more important lesson may be that I should not be eating frozen pizza at all. Maybe that was the message the universe was trying to send me. Message received…in retrospect.

Another day in the new forty- obla di obla da
