I don’t pretend to understand the diversity of folks’ taste in items. I often see things for sale in catalogs that I cannot imagine anyone would ever spend good money on. I would even put down a bet that some of them are destined to be included in a 75% off sale. But what do I know? I am just one person with my own idea of what is appealing in a big world filled with millions of people with their own ideas of what is appealing.
But still, there are some items which I cannot help myself from wondering aloud about. The fly scarf at Signals is one of those items. I cannot fathom who will buy or wear this scarf.
I should clarify – when I say fly – I do not mean fly like a bird or an airplane or the slang interpretation of fly (as in you are cool/hip/awesome/fly) – I mean the insect.
I cannot imagine what prompted this print. Did the creator see a scarf filled with butterflies, dragonflies, or ladybugs and suddenly think – by-golly, a scarf with flies would be a new twist! Was the fabric created for some special purpose for a bug spray manufacturer and the remainder sold off as a bargain basement sale? Is this part of some cult television or movie lore that I am unaware of?
The scarf has already been marked down from $29.95 to $7.48. Apparently a scarf covered in giant flies is not the sought after item the buyers thought it might be. Who knew?
I do hold out the slim possibility that there is someone out there who will find this to be just what they were looking for. As such, I want to spread the word about the 75% off sale. If a fly scarf is what you have been looking for, get it now for $7.48 – while supplies last!
My bet is that there will be further price reductions on this item. 😉
And a note to all my demented friends (which is darn near all my friends) and my family members who think they are funny (which is all my family members) – I know how your minds work – don’t even think about buying me this scarf. Because the only thing I can think of that would be more irritating than receiving such a scarf as a gift is receiving ten such scarves as gifts. Oh yes, it could happen in my world…perhaps that is what the marketing folks at Signals were counting on. 😉

You could always re-gift them back to the original gift-givers. That would show ’em!

Whenever I see a product like this, I immediately try to imagine the conversations that took place when the designer/inventor set out to “sell” their idea to higher-ups. Can you imagine trying to sell the idea of Slinkies…or Pet Rocks…or Hula Hoops? ….And yet….
(I’m guessing that Tim can think of a bunch more!)
