In the past three days I have been cut-off in traffic by eight different drivers, which leads me to say, “People – WTF?” I mean seriously…eight different drivers driving about town with what appears to be a blatant disregard for their safety and the safety of others. And yippee, I got to encounter them all.
Oh sure, I know there are others. It is a symptom of the season. I call it the “holi-daze” – the driver distracted by the mental holiday to-do lists, last minute shopping challenges and flurry of social activities. People start to zone out…they pay less attention…they become mini-hazards in-and-of themselves.
I have to admit, it makes me crabby. I think about the heightened potential for accidents and I fear for family members and friends who may have to deal with the news that someone they love has been injured in a car accident. That would really take the joy out of the holidays.
So, in my recurring role as a safety harbinger, let me remind everyone to please be careful out there on the roads this time of year. Don’t let holi-daze be the ruin of your holidays. When you are driving, give it your full attention; and, add extra care this season in watching for drivers who may be distracted and cause you harm (and this goes for those on foot as well – don’t assume that folks in vehicles see you and won’t hit you).
No one wants to be a holiday statistic – unless it is for the number of fruitcakes received (or not). Give yourself and others the gift of your attention while driving this holiday season. 😉
