Historically I have purchased very simple black planners with very little hoopla. I don’t feel a need to have a place for every conceivable piece of information in my planner like some folks do. I have always assessed planners primarily based on their utility. My concern is with the amount of space I have to write in and having both a full month layout and a detailed weekly appointment layout.
Heretofore beauty has never been a concern and color within my planner has been of little interest; but this year I was drawn to a planner that featured the art of Flavia. The planner is quite thick and very colorful throughout. Actually, it is titled a “Personal Organizer” – but that makes me think of a human being who is assisting me in my actual organizing of my person, so I will stick with calling it a planner.
This planner has pretty pictures, nice sayings and different colors for each month. It also has a full complement of 2012 monthly calendars, an address book, dozens of note pages and a birthday and anniversaries page. It is about as far away from my typical black non-descript, bare-bone planner as you can get. I don’t know what possessed me to buy it. I must have been in a mood.
But darn it if that planner hasn’t grown on me since I picked it up in early November. Somehow my year feels brighter and more hopeful because of it – silly I know – but it has an uplifting effect. It makes me want to move through the year more gleefully…it actually makes me want to spend time personally organizing my life. I guess with all the prettiness and color it is something more than a planner… it is perhaps aptly named a personal organizer. Even if it isn’t a human being it seems like it will cheerily assist me in the actual organizing of my person…one colorful month at a time. 😉
